The President Donald Trump endorsement of Michael Bouchard, running for Congress in the 10th district, seems to have put the thumb on scale for him over fellow classmate and candidate Robert Lulgjuraj, who announced on July 14 he was ending his campaign for the seat, which means it’s Bouchard’s win in the primary. Bouchard raised $1.38 million as of the end of June, while Lulgjuraj raised $1.28 million. Questions have been privately buzzing that Bouchard, a former Army captain, turned to his father, longtime Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard, a former president of Major County Sheriffs of America, for assistance in lobbying Trump. “Obviously that’s how endorsements come down. Trump’s not sitting there watching every race,” said one politico. “This is how a professionally-run campaign with D.C. influences works,” acknowledged Oakland University political science professor David Dulio. Not so, said the sheriff. “He’s doing his own thing, standing on his own. He said to me, ‘If I’m willing to die for my country, why wouldn’t I be willing to run for it?’” The Bronze Star recipient is taking nothing for granted, his father said, even with an over 30-point lead. As one GOP stalwart said about the race: “it’s now a fait accompli; Bouchard will be the GOP nominee.” If he wins, he’ll face the winner of the Democratic primary.
