SAME OLD BOSS

Haley Stevens

The push by Democrats for a new generation of lawmakers during the 2018 election failed to bring new leadership to Congress, as former Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was elected to her former role. Freshmen Democratic congresswomen for the 11th District Haley Stevens (Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills) and Elissa Slotkin (Rochester, Rochester Hills) of the 8th District said during their campaigns they wouldn’t support Pelosi in her bid for speaker, with both lawmakers holding back support for the California Democrat during the caucus vote in November. However, Stevens, who said she would support Pelosi with a vote on the House floor in January if she ran unopposed, changed her vote to help elect the groundbreaking female speaker. Meanwhile, on January 3, Slotkin stuck to her guns, and replied “present” with her vote, avoiding a yes or no.
