West Michigan Congresswoman Hillary Scholten (D-Grand Rapids) came to the defense of Jeremy Moss (D-Bloomfield) in late August when the state Senator, who is running for the seat in Congress now held by Haley Stevens, was the target of antisemitic social media influencer Hasan Piker – he of the famed quote that the USA “deserved” the September 11 terrorist attack. Piker posted to a platform a picture of Moss and what has been labeled a questionable audio clip, first posted by a primary opponent, in which the Jewish candidate supposedly said his main reason for running for office was to benefit Israel. The toxic influencer also suggested that such views could result in more violence against Jews in America. Scholten wasted no time in condemning Piker, labeling him a “hack who thrives on hate, shock and awe.” The Congresswoman said such rhetoric “has no place in Michigan and no place in our country.” Scholten is considered a rising power in the Michigan Democratic party. An attorney who worked in both private practice and at one time served in the Department of Justice, Scholten bills herself as a “common-sense, pragmatic center” Democrat, often found to be critical of the socialist movement in the party. First elected to Congress in 2022, Scholten is a prodigious fundraiser for the national and state party, in addition to financially supporting individual candidates. By some tallies, she has raised and passed along nearly $800,000 to party efforts this election cycle.
