THREATENING LETTERS

1 min read

At least two Michigan members of Congress are known to have been targets in a wave of threatening letters sent nation-wide to government and election officials in recent weeks. West Michigan Democrat Congresswoman Hillary Scholten’s received a letter threatening a “civil war” after the November 3 election, supposedly sent by Democratic Socialists of America, with a return address from a long-vacant West Coast office of the group, which has denied any connection to the letters. U.S. Senator Elissa Slotkin, posting on social media platforms, also acknowledged that a letter containing a white powder was “intercepted en route to our office in Detroit.” The letters have prompted a response from the FBI, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the U.S. Capitol Police. No word as of this writing on what the white powder was in a number of letters received across the country. The letters are reminiscent of the 2001 anthrax letters sent just after the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the country. At that time, letters went to government officials and media organizations and contained the Bacillus Anthracis spores. Ultimately five persons were killed and another 17 persons were infected.
