Outgoing U.S. Senator Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township) is heading west on his infamous motorcycle when he retires from the Senate in January. He announced he will be trading politics for education as he becomes an endowed chair in practical politics and co-lead the University of Southern California’s Center for the Political Future with longtime Republican strategist Mike Murphy. USC said Peters will teach courses at both the Los Angeles and Washington campuses. “I look at this as a capstone of my years in public service at the local, state and federal level,” Peters said in a statement. “It’s never been more important to bring people together, and there’s no better place to start than working with students and getting them engaged in civic activism.” But it’s not a complete arrivederci to Michigan. Peters said he and his wife, Colleen, will continue to live and work in Michigan, too – notably in the summer months.
