FIRST CHESS MOVES
The man Congresswoman Haley Stevens (D-Oakland County), former health department chair Abdul El-Sayed (D) and former Congressman Mike Rogers (R-White Lake) want to replace, Senator Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Township), has disclosed what could be his possible next gig. Per Senate ethics rules, Peters notified the Senate Ethics Committee June 3 that he has entered talks to with the University of Southern California in Los Angeles for potential employment. The form does not state what kind of role Peters is negotiating. Peters, who first was elected senator to Michigan in 2014, chose not to run for re-election this year, which would have been his third term. He did not state a reason for retiring. Peters has a long electoral history in Michigan, following serving in the U.S. Naval Reserve and working for 22 years as an investment advisor. He was first elected to the Rochester Hills City Council in 1991, and then to the Michigan Senate from 1995-2002. He narrowly lost a race for Michigan Attorney General to Mike Cox in 2002, and was then appointed Michigan Lottery Commissioner from 2002-2008, when he ran and served as a representative for Congress, until he became a U.S. Senator.
