Former Congressman and Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers – who had the field all to himself since he announced his reprise run – is getting some company on the campaign trail. After Republicans shooed away legit contenders (ie, Congressman Bill Huizenga, who represents southwest Michigan, who was convinced by party leaders, including President Trump, to let Rogers have it to himself), Michigan GOP co-chair Bernadette Smith resigned in early November and announced that she was running to be the Republican standard bearer in the August primary, despite being largely unknown, including in the MAGAverse. In a release she said, “I am stepping forward because it is time to return to the principles that shaped this nation. Faith. Family. Freedom. These principles will direct every effort I make as we work to protect our liberties, strengthen our communities, and rebuild trust in public service.” One politico opined, “She’s a nut. She has no money, no endorsements, and no chance.”
